Rhodos I: May 30 - June 18, 2010
IN LIGHT OF THE LEGAL AND CULTURAL traditions of Greece, summer study in that country is particularly appropriate for law students seeking specialization in admiralty and maritime law, public international law, conflict of laws, international business transactions, environmental law, and legal institutions of the European Union. With the view to serving those interests, Tulane Law School has sponsored summer sessions in Greece every year since 1980.
The 2010 Greek Isles sessions will be held in the islands of Rhodos and Spetses. There will be two Rhodos sessions and one Spetses session. In the First Rhodos session (May 30 - June 18), students may concentrate on Admiralty, International Conventions and the Law of the Sea (8 courses are offered). In the Spetses session (June 20 - July 9), students may concentrate on private international law, comparative law, business law, international procedure, and healthcare. The program for the second Rhodos session (July 11 - July 30) will focus on issues of Comparative Law associated with the transacting and regulation of international business transactions in the European Union. All courses are taught by well-known professionals in settings that enhance an understanding of the international dimensions of the issues and resources at stake. Students may enroll in one, two, or all three sessions for up to four credit hours in each session. Accordingly, Tulane’s nationally and internationally recognized summer offerings may be combined to secure a total of up to eight credit hours in two sessions and up to twelve credit hours in three sessions.
Rhodos I
Famous for the legendary Rhodian sea laws and its natural beauty, the island of Rhodos boasts rolling green hills that reach the emerald waters of the southeast Mediterranean Sea and form hundreds of miles of beaches and coves. Ancient Greek temples, Byzantine churches, and medieval palaces speak of the glories of the past. Optional excursions are planned around the island by sail and to the islands of Chalki, Kos or Symi by ferry.
Affiliated Institutions. Tulane Law School has an agreement for educational cooperation with the Aegean Institute of the Law of the Sea and Maritime Law, located in the city of Rhodos. Tulane Law School also has long-standing relationships with the Law Schools of the Universities of Thessaloniki and Athens. Faculty members from those institutions teach in Rhodos, and Spetses, and frequently at Tulane.

Its main objectives include the carrying out of research projects, publication of scientific reports and announcements, organization of lectures, seminars and congresses, collaboration with Greek and international academic institutions and scholars, and issuance of opinions and consultations. The Institute has organized and participated in many scientific programs on the law of the sea and maritime law. Since 1994, it has co-sponsored with Tulane Law School the annual summer session in Rhodos. The Institute grants a number of scholarships every summer to students from Greece and the Balkans to attend the Rhodos Summer Session.
The Aegean Institute also organizes and is the local host of the Rhodes Academy of Oceans Law and Policy. The Rhodes Academy, held annually, is an international collegial undertaking with participation of the Aegean Institute of the Law of the Sea and Maritime Law, the Center for Oceans Law and Policy, the Max Planck Institute of Comparative Public Law and International Law, and the Netherlands Institute for the Law of the Sea. The goal of the Rhodes Academy is to promote the rule of Law in the world’s oceans by providing a forum for education on the basic principles and contemporary issues in oceans’ law and policy. By offering an intensive three-week course of study, the Rhodes Academy offers a unique educational opportunity to a diverse group of individuals whose professional goals, interests or responsibilities focus on oceans’ issues.
